last day of volunteering

On 4/13, I volunteered at San Jose clinic. I helped package artwork that would be auctitioned at a auction for the clinic. I felt really glad to help the less fortunate as the money from the auction will go into helping people with no health insurance. I enjoyed working at san jose clinic; I will consider volunteering there in the summer. I feel appreciated and happy to use my time to help others. Throughout my volunteering experience with the clinic, I've sorted through diabetic health care packages and helped with supplies inventory. I've also conducted a room inventory. All these things I know will help the doctors perform their jobs at maximum productivity. I've enjoyed working at the clinic.

3/23, 3/30

The previous week (3/23) I helped look for msds sheets for some of the chemicals used. I thought it was interesting since I've learned in chemistry what msds sheets are and how there's one for every chemical and/or equipment. On 3/30, I sorted through care packages for diabetic patients by sorting toothpaste, syringes, and lotion. I felt close to the patients as diabetes run in my family and it made me feel like I'm making a difference, small though it may be.

3/9 and 3/16

Last week, I helped clean the supplies closet. Today I washed gynecological instruments. Afterwards, I conducted a supply inventory of one of the rooms, which is surprisingly time consuming. It felt more personal to do a supply inventory in one of the patient rooms as those supplies are what the doctor(s) will use to help their patients heal. It feels really enjoyable to help those that are less fortunate then I am in an area that I'm interested in.

On Friday I went to orientation at the clinic. We took a tour around the clinic. The areas of patient care at the  clinic include primary care, dental care including preventive and restorative, and specialty care. The areas of speciality care include cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, orthopedics and other specialties. The clinic was very beautiful and I found out that it was fairly new as they had moved there about two years ago. We also watched a video from OSHA about preventing the spread of disease and pathogens. I'm in the medical area and I'll be doing supplies inventory. My first volunteering day is the upcoming Friday from two to four. I'm looking forward to it.

Background Info for San Jose Clinic

I've filled out my volunteer form and am going to take it to San Jose Clinic. In the meanwhile I've been doing some research on the clinic. San Jose Clinic was founded in 1922 and it's one of the oldest charity clinics in the United States. The clinic began with a donation of $50 from the Charity Guild of Catholic Women. San José Clinic was able to open its doors and treat the first patients with a small budget. San Jose clinic provides primary and specialty medical care, dental, pharmacy and laboratory services to  4,000 uninsured, low-income patients each year.  There are more than 1.1 million, one in nearly every three, people in the Houston area that lack health insurance. The numbers of people who don't have health insurance surprised me The fact that the clinic provides various types of care in one area amazed me. The beginnings of the clinic also surprised me. I'm really looking forward to volunteering there.
I also looked at where the clinic is. It's pretty close to the university. I'm thinking about going a few hours on Friday and Saturday, at least once a week.
